Tribal Sub Plan (Agriculture):

A project on “Promotion of Agriculture Centric Sustainable Livelihood Security for tribal farmers of Assam” under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) is being implemented by KVK, Karbi Anglong since 2013-14 in Dima Hasao district. Under the Project, different components in Agriculture, Horticulture and Livestock sectors are being implemented in Dima Hasao district for promotion of livelihood of Tribal farmers. Besides these activities to make easy availability of farm implements for different agricultural operations a Custom Hiring Centre at Umrangso has been established. A seed storage centre and both covered and open threshing floor have also been established at Gereso village of Dima Hasao district.

Tribal Sub Plan (Veterinary):

Project on “Sustainable piggery centric activities for Tribal farmers in Assam” under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) Project is being implemented during 2018-19. Under this Project, eight breeding units and 52 small fattening units of piggery covering 60 tribal farms families have been established to encourage scientific pig farming for Livelihood security of the Tribal farmers as well as to make available quality piglets in the district.

National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA):

National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) is a network project of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) launched in February, 2011. The project aims to enhnce resilience of Indian Agriculture to climate change and climate vulnerability through strategic research and technology demonstration. Nilapur village under Lumbajong block of Karbi Anglong district was selected as NICRA village to excecute various NICRA technology demonstration components (NICRA-TDC). The major climate vulnerabilities identified in the illage is water scarsity occurring throughout the year, severely during winter season resulting no or very poor crop and livestock performance. To improve resilience and socio economic conditions from current situation following interventions are undertaken –

  • Low cost water harvesting structure/ Jalkund
  • Low cost vermicomposting for recycling of organic matter
  • Demonstration on cropping sequence ; Maize – blackgram – sesame
  • Demonstration on water saving SRI technology in summer rice
  • Demonstration on High Yielding sugarcane variety Nambor
  • Strip cropping of Pineapple with Broomgrass
  • Improved upland rice variety Inglongkiri
  • Intercropping of summer maize + summer blackgram followed by Kharif sesame + Kharif green gram
  • Demonstration of Introduction of Pig variety Rani crossbreed pig under deep litter housing system
  • Upgration of Assam Hill Goat with Beetal
  • Demonstration of Duck cum fish farming IFS
  • Dual purpose Vanaraja poultry under machang type of housing
  • Composite fish culture in existing farm pond

A Zonal Monitoring Team comprised the following members: Chairman: Dr. Hrushikesha Senapati, Ex-Dean, OUAT; Vice-Chairman: Dr. A.K.Tripathi, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Guwahati Members: Dr. B.Khanpal, Director, ICAR-Research Complex for NEH Region, Tripura Centre, Dr. JVNS Prasad, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CRIDA, Dr. R.K. Saud, ADEE, AAU, Jorhat visited in the NICRA village during the year 2019 which they have appreciated and suggested on the different components undertaken in the project. An exhibition cum farmer scientist interaction program was also conducted in connection with Kisan Mela at Nilapur village.

Attracting and Retaining Youths in Agriculture (ARYA)

Attracting and Retaining Youths in Agriculture (ARYA) a project was started in Krishi Vigyan Kendra , Karbi Anglong in the year 2016-17 with the objectives of enhancing annual income and social status of the youth, to help in taking up a settle income generations system. The enterprises that were taken up by the KVK were dual purpose poultry production, Pig and piglet production, mushroom production and commercialization of Pineapple production. A total of 200 youths are targeted to cover under these four enterprises within a period of five years with 50 youths in each enterprise.

  • A total 120 youths, 26 under poultry, 18 under piggery, 26 each under pineapple and 50 under mushroom enterprise were covered under the project
  • Directly created 2565 mandays under four different enterprises
Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (APART)

The APART project, a World Bank supported project is implemented in different districts of Assam including Karbi Anglong district. The objective of the Project is to ‘add value and improve resilience of selected agriculture value chains, focusing on smallholder farmers and agro-entrepreneurs in targeted districts of Assam’. The component of the project includes enabling agri-enterprise development, facilitating agro cluster development, fostering market-led production and resilience enhancement.

In Kharif season (2018-19) three varieties of flood tolerant rice varieties were introduced, in support with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) which includes Swarna Sub1 , Bahadur sub1, Ranjit Sub1 and a premium quality rice variety Kola Joha in various rice cultivating pockets of Karbi Anglong districts.

Different meetings, training and demonstration were organized for the farmers, dealers and extension functionaries for the Post Harvest Machineries and Rice value chain Machinery. In future this project aims to reach, every nook and corner of the district with fulfilling its noble objective.

Cluster Frontline Demonstration (CFLD):

Cluster Frontline Demonstration (CFLD) is a unique approach to demonstrate the production potential of newly released technologies in agriculture as well as transfer and popularize them in the farmers’ field for varietal diversification. Demonstration of rice, wheat, pulses and oilseeds is mainly done in cluster approach of at least 10 hectares, being conducted under NFSM and NMOOP respectively. KVK, Karbi Anglong has been conducting CFLD from the year 2015-16, both in the Kharif and Rabi season. Pulses (e.g.: Blackgram, Lentil, Fieldpea, Lathyrus) and oilseeds (e.g.: Rapeseed, Sesame, Groundnut, Linseed) have been covered in various villages all over the district for the last four years.

Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav (MGMG):

Under the Mera gaon Mara Gaurav project seven villages has been covered and technology intervention through demonstration on poultry, piggery, pineapple, ginger, turmeric, papaya etc. Undertaken in Rupsing Hanse, Longki Tisso, Majgaon, Nilapur, Kania Enghi, Mithiphang, Hemari Bey. Various activities were undertaken in these adopted villages depending on the suitability and feasibility of the activity in relation to a particular adopted village. Emphasis were given on animal husbandry and fruit crop like pineapple, mushroom for the adopted villages where there is less lowland but more highland. A total of 19 training on various topics benefiting 475 farmers were imparted and 17 demonstrations were conducted. Moreover 25 nos. of SMSs were sent to all farm families of the villages. Four JLG constituting 28 farmers were form and linked up to banks. The JLGs formed have received Rs. 13,50,000.00 from banks as loan.

Doubling Farmers Income:

The programme on Doubling Farmers Income is going on Rupsing Hanse village of Karbi Anglong. The activities in this respect are capacity building through imparting trainings, conducting demonstration on agricultural technologies. Linkages were established with LDR Bank for financial assistance as loan besides other Govt. Departments viz. Dept. Of Fishery, KAAC, AHSIDC, Karbi Anglong. A total of 34 families of the village were covered under these activities and 28 farmers, one from each family, availed Rs. 13.5 lakhs as loan from LDR Bank and started commercial pig farming, pineapple cultivation.

Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana – Remunerative Approaches for Agriculture and Allied Sectors Rejuvination (RKVY-RAFTAAR)

Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana – Remunerative Approaches for Agriculture and Allied Sectors Rejuvination (RKVY-RAFTAAR) is a unique scheme of Govt. of India, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (MoA&FW). It is aimed at strengthening infrastructure in agriculture and allied sectors to promote agripreneurship and agribusiness by facilitating financial aid and nurturing a system of business incubation.

  • A large scale demonstration of short duration new mustard variety in selected district of Assam under RKVY-RAFTAAR 2019-20 has been started in Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Karbi Anglong.
